Alberto Treves

Welcome to Education Space

Alberto Treves is a school building specialist with more than 1000 projects completed in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. He specializes in the early steps of the educations space process, having done facility evaluations, master plans, written design manuals, and specifications, carried out school designs, and advised governments and private institutions on capital improvement projects. Most of the time, he works on projects of 40, 100 or more school locations. He is a graduate of the School of Architecture of the University of Buenos Aires, a Certificate in Educational Facilities Planning obtained in 2001 from the University of California, and he has a Recognized Educational Facility Planner designation granted in 2003 by the CEFPI – Council of Educational Facility Planners International, now the Association for the Learning Environment.

Over the years, Alberto Treves has developed a special ability to review and assess how projects perform and whether they achieve the expected impact. Investments in school infrastructure, furniture, equipment, and educational material are usually very high and there is a fair expectation that every dollar spent will yield a positive return in terms of not only improving coverage and retention of students but also making schools more relevant to communities and more attractive for teachers to work in.

Because of Alberto Treves’ extensive and diverse experience, he can identify challenges in school building programs and offer several courses of action with proven solutions to improve what is already working or to reverse the course when needed. Even though a school building is materialized by masons, plumbers, and electricians, among others, there is a multifaceted process leading up to it. Most of the time, it starts with the acknowledgment of a certain shortfall in educational services, an in-depth needs assessment, and/ or a very specific policy direction. In all cases, feasibility studies or pre-investment analyses are necessary to evaluate delivery options and the resources that are necessary to deploy project/ program objectives.

In summary, as a consultant and team leader, Alberto Treves has always supported very ambitious and innovative projects that provide clients with facilities that are safe, appropriate for the function, attractive, cost-effective, and sustainable.

International experience includes Argentina, Belize, Colombia, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Gaza, Republic of Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, México, Nicaragua, Panamá, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Sierra Leone, United Arab Emirates, United States, and Venezuela.

Clients include the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, African Development Bank, USAID, Millennium Challenge Corporation, European Commission for Education, Unesco, Department of Labor, Department of Defense, District of Columbia Public Schools, and other prestigious public and private organizations.

Before moving the United States, Alberto worked in school building projects from government positions in his home country of Argentina. And as an international consultant for the CONESCAL – School Construction for Latin America, headquartered in Mexico City.

Although contemporary architectural discourse frequently introduces new terms and concepts such as sustainability, resilience, cost-effectiveness, cultural responsiveness, wellness, inclusivity, adaptability, and environmental stewardship, these ideas are, in many respects, modern expressions of principles that have guided good architecture for centuries. Sound planning has always sought to use resources efficiently, respond appropriately to climate and site conditions, support the well-being of occupants, respect local culture and context, and create durable, functional, and aesthetically meaningful environments.

Likewise, successful design has traditionally balanced economic constraints with performance requirements, while quality construction has emphasized longevity, craftsmanship, maintainability, and responsible use of materials. What has changed over time is not the fundamental nature of these objectives, but rather the terminology, metrics, technologies, and regulatory frameworks used to describe and evaluate them. The enduring challenge remains the same: to create buildings and places that effectively serve human needs, respect their surroundings, make prudent use of available resources, and provide lasting value to society.

This is why Alberto Treves is committed to continued research, innovation, professional reflection, the study of emerging challenges, evaluating completed projects, documenting lessons learned, and sharing successful practices with the broader professional community. Educational needs, teaching methodologies, technologies, demographics, and societal expectations continue to evolve.

Consequently, this requires an ongoing commitment to understanding how learning environments can best support student achievement and community well-being. The ultimate objective is not merely to construct school buildings, but to provide learning environments that effectively respond to the aspirations, needs, and resources of the communities they serve, achieving the highest possible educational value while remaining practical, affordable, adaptable, and sustainable over time.
